Last weekend we met up with some friends who also have a house in Bulgaria. With us still being in the UK working and saving, sometimes the Bulgarian dream seems a long way off. So it was lovely to swap photos and stories with two people who have been there and done it. They’ve finished the renovations on their house and therefore have the calm, happy demeanour that people with plumbing generally have. I’ve never looked at a photograph of someone’s toilet and felt jealous before! Their house is in a different area to ours – about three hours drive away, near the city of Stara Zagora – but I hope we’ll get to see each other if we’re all out there at the same time.
Tammy, Sam, if you’re reading this, thanks for your advice, patient answers to our questions and for generally just egging us on! Наздраве!
Meanwhile, we’re still heading out for two weeks in May and, aside from the toilet situation, I can’t wait! Slightly concerned by the recent reports of April snow but it seems to be warming up now. Today it’s a very pleasant 19 degrees in Sofia and it should be a bit warmer by the time we go. Does anyone have any tips for essential items that we must pack? If you were going to stay somewhere very, erm, rustic, what could you not live without? I’m thinking:
· Sleeping bags
· Wind-up lantern and torch
· Tape measure
· Bulgarian dictionary, phrasebook, maps
· Pen and paper
· Wetwipes – about four packs!
· Facewipes
· Tissues
· Dry shampoo
· Towels
· Sunblock
Some things I won’t be needing:
· Contact lenses – without the ability to properly bathe, I aint sticking my fingers in my eyes!
· Anything ‘pretty’
· My fabulous new heeled clogs, sigh
