I don’t know why we don’t get out more. Aside
from nipping to the shops or market, popping round to see the neighbours or
going for our sporadic Bulgarian lessons, sometimes weeks and weeks go by
without us really going anywhere.
Is it because we’re content homebodies, happiest
pottering in the garden and enjoying views of the surrounding mountains? Or are
we just lazy? Is it because I have, you know, an actual job? Or is it because
we’re too busy binging on The Handmaid’s
Tale? Probably all of the above.
Thankfully, though, every now and then I get
the urge to do something. It’s like
cleaning. I hate cleaning but I’m occasionally gripped by what I call ‘the
cleaning horn’ and set about cleaning the house with impressive vigour. Last
weekend I had the same sort of urgent need – but for sightseeing, not
scrubbing.
We’ve not seen nearly enough of this beautiful,
crazy-ass country we call home. Not even the Central Balkan National Park, the
edge of which is shamefully close to where we live. So I’m making it my mission
to get out more this summer and see something new every month. Up this month:
some waterfalls and a big old bat cave.
Krushuna
Falls
About two hours from us, but a pleasant drive with
field after field of sunflowers.
Devetashka
Cave
Only 20km or so from Krushuna, so worth a look
if you’re in the area.
Sopot
Reservoir
It's a seriously big bat cave. |
You can't really tell from the picture, but the black smudges are bats. Honest. |
This was essentially on the way home and we’d
been meaning to take a look for ages. By this point, it was late afternoon on a
hot, sticky day so we didn’t stay (and the Bulgarians playing booming music
from their car stereo didn’t help), but we’d go back and explore further
another (quieter) time.
